2010 Community Leader: Petersburg Elks Lodge
After seven years of debate the Petersburg Elks Lodge has voted to institute a voluntary smoke-free policy, eliminating 100% of secondhand smoke exposure in their club effective April 1, 2010. While this, in itself, is an important step to improving community health, it is even more important as the Elks becomes a leader that other organizations can look towards by making a strong statement, particularly, as the City of Petersburg wrestles with a smoke-free workplace ordinance. While other bars and restaurants in Petersburg are fighting to keep an ordinance off the ballot, the Elks Lodge is proving themselves to be a forward thinking group that cares for the health of their employees and patrons.
