Alaska Tobacco Control Alliance
2010 Trail Breaker Award: Alaska Christian College
For the past three years, Peninsula Smokefree Partnership and Kenaitze Indian Tribe has been working with both Kenai Peninsula College (KPC) and Alaska Christian College (ACC) on establishing smokefree campuses. We have done several presentations to students and staff and conducted a survey in 2008, which indicated a desire of the student body to consider smokefree status. On February 8, 2010, ACC officially went smokefree! The student leaders initiated the action in the spring of 2009, and ACC leadership approved the move this winter. We are proud that the students and staff at ACC recognize the benefits of going smokefree, both by reducing the number of students who use tobacco and by eliminating the dangers of exposure to secondhand smoke.
