Travel Scholarships

Note: A new scholarship application form will be posted in early February.

ATCA has funds available to partially or fully subsidize the cost of people to allow them to attend the Alaska Tobacco Summit or other training. These people should be able to demonstrate their involvement in tobacco prevention efforts.

There are also limited funds available to send people, who are involved in tobacco prevention efforts in the state, to national conferences or trainings. Scholarships are intended to increase the level of expertise and sophistication of Alaskan’s working in tobacco prevention and control.

Persons who work for organizations that receive grants or contracts from the Alaska TPC Program, and whose position is funded by said grant or contract, will NOT be eligible for travel scholarships. If the Alaska TPC Program does not directly fund those persons’ position, but does fund the organization through a grant or contract, the person is eligible, but the Scholarship Workgroup will take that funding into account.
Scholarship recipients traveling to national conferences will be required to submit a written report that includes:

  • Highlights from the conference or training
  • Conference materials, including copies of agendas and handouts.

All scholarship recipients may be asked to participate in evaluating the Tobacco Summit, or other events for overall effectiveness and the effectiveness of the scholarship process.

Anyone who is traveling during regular business hours must document their supervisor’s approval prior to applying for scholarship.

Who is eligible for scholarship?

Funds are available to anyone who has been involved in tobacco prevention efforts for at least six months, or who can document their involvement in tobacco control issues. Members requesting a scholarship must complete the scholarship application along with a signed Memorandum of Agreement (included in the application) and include appropriate attachments as needed. The application is posted on this page

What is covered by scholarship funds?

Scholarships are awarded to help people involved in tobacco prevention from around the state offset some of their travel-related expenses. There are 5 scholarship levels calculated by determining the average cost from each region. Therefore each region has its own scholarship level.

How are applications reviewed?

  • The ATCA support staff grades each application on scale, referring to specific criteria, then makes decision – based on financial availability
  • Number of years in tobacco control.
  • The size of an applicant’s community.
  • Does the applicant receive State TPC Program funding and if yes, could those funds be used to cover scholarship request?
  • Scholarship completion.
  • Description of where additional funds will come from.
  • Plan for disseminating information from the Summit, conference or training.

Who will make the travel arrangements?

Scholarship recipients are responsible for making their own travel arrangements. They are encouraged to take advantage of the hotel discounts given by conference organizers to qualified participants.  They are also encouraged to apply for other scholarship opportunities that may be available.

For Scholarship recipients going to the ATCA Summit, there is an option to stretch their scholarship by sharing rooms with other scholarship recipients. ATCA support staff will gladly help coordinate those efforts.

What is the Memorandum of Agreement?

It is an acknowledgement of policy and procedure that must be signed each time a scholarship application is submitted. A copy of the agreement is included in the application packet.

What is the application deadline?

Scholarship applications for the ATCA Summit are due 45 days before the Tobacco Summit and will be reviewed as quickly as possible so members can be notified and have 30 days to plan travel.

Scholarship applications for national conferences or trainings must be submitted at least six weeks before the event, and notification will be sent within 2 weeks.  Scholarship applications to national conferences or trainings must include the agenda for the conference, and contact information for the organization putting on the conference.
